| Make sure you at lease have a decent external antennae that's in good condition. Also if you still have the old style ribbon cable then dump it and get some quad shielded coax cable. |

| Can you get ABC1 on channel 21? If you can only get it on channel 2 it is almost certainly an antenna problem. Channels 20-29 are in the part of the spectrum that used to be channel 12. Antennas were generally designed for channels 2 to ten and are no use for channel 12. You might even have difficulty with one or 10 on digital because they use the old channel 11. |

popaquad as bowiee said you need a good external antenna suitable for the entire frequency spectrum of digital TV and good quality cable to get a consistently good result. It might have been Ok for your old receiving equipment but digital changes things a bit. Some channels may be OK others not. Unlike analogue where you get varying quality pictures, a weak signal will give no picture on digital or constant breakup.
With one tuner and a certain antenna I was able to get any channel I wanted as long as it was SBS. With another antenna I got everything but SBS.
It's hardly the ABC's fault. |

We got a digital HD TV in Jan 2009 but were told we had to wait until 2012 to get digital in our area.
But along the coast road 16k they had just got it.
So I asked Harvey Norman who they used to do their antenna work for them and got onto him and asked him to come and test our signal if we pointed the antenna to the one in the nearest town 16k away and he did have to provide a new aerial and also a booster but we get all the channels with a high signal. Cost $229.
Best money we have spent lately as you get some choice now instead of 4 channels.

I have a digital TV card in my computer it receives everything but 7(Two) 10 & one HD.
My father bought a set top box, I hooked it up to my aerial where it received all the channels.
The hardware in the box is obviously different perhaps the OP has a set top box with inferior hardware like my pc card. |

I live in north-west WA and apparently we won't be getting the commercial HD channels for another three years. I thought it was actually 2010 at the moment, not 1910. We can get ABC and SBS digital - whoopee.
Mind you, we live in a country that can't/won't even provide a mobile phone signal along the length of the major highways.
Funny though, we were at a roadhouse about 190km from town the other day. No mobile phone signal there (and the payphone starts chewing up your money before the person you are calling even answers their phone). A truckie told us if we drive 500m into the bush the mobile phone signal is perfect. What the hell is the point of having a mobile phone signal 500 metres off the highway if hardly anybody knows about it? |

Unfortunately the Government is not using their media advertisments to get the right message out to consumers. Buying a set top box or Digital TV is not necessarily going to give you Digital TV. Majority (but not all) of homes will require antenna, cable and wall plate upgrades. The only message geting out to consumers is Digital is coming between 2010-2013. Depending on where you are located, depends on when you are switched over. The switchover program is on the digital taskforce website.
Consumers need to be aware that when purchasing a digital set top box or digital TV there is a high chance you will also have to add the cost of an antenna replacement and cable. |

| I agree 100%, I had a little windfall and bought myself a new TV, I had a digital set top box and analouge TV prior and it worked fine, on installing the new TV I could not get any pictures. I called Samsung and they told me it was due to the fact that the set top box had an amplifier in it and the TV which cost 15 times more does not. I managed to fix the problem with a signal amplifier bought of ebay for about $25 GME make them and I highly recommend. Both the government and TV manufacturers should be ashamed and held accountable for what is the disgraceful practice of selling and marketing something they know people will have problems with. |

| I bought a set top box a few years ago. As I was not confident to set it up, I bought it from a locally owned shop rather than a department store. I paid a little more, but they delivered it and then tuned everything for me. I have not had one problem. |

I go to the little shop in the nearest town and they do the exact same for any TV DVD Recorder etc etc. Got a bloke doing set ups every day.
Called Harvey Norman - great friendly store that will do anything to help. |

| I just purchased an LCD Tyagi 47" TV from the manufacturer/importer for $620 - reception works perfectly, picks up every channel no problems. I am in a regional area in a valley between a 600m Mtn & a 100m ridge (over that is the direction of the TV signals)... |
