Totally agree with Consforever - Qantas is fantastic - their hosties might not fawn all over you but the company don't quibble about a half a kg or 2cm on a bag. I very happily paid $90 more (than their competitors) for a flight recently Bris-Melb because I didn't want any hassles with some of these niggly, unfair ways of making money that suddenly appear in 6pt font on page 3 of a ticket. Qantas for my travel

re: the kitten. Don't bother going to the ACCC, you will be wasting your time and theirs - the price of that service is not regulated. If they wanted to, they could charge you $1 million for the service. The ACCC is going to tell you that goods and services providers can charge whatever the market will bear - and more if they want to try. That's what a free market economy is. As for GST, yes it is applicable as you are paying for a service provided in this country (regardless that the service ends with a flight out of country) - it is a goods and services tax. The GST added to the bill is for the service. No, you usually don't pay GST on exported items, but that is GST on the purchase of the actual item! ie GST is not payable on the kitten itself if someone from overseas buys it or you buy it and take it out of the country, but you still have to pay GST on the shipping of the kitten. Having worked in both the ACCC and Customs, I can tell you you are completely incorrect in your assumptions of how the law works in this situation.

Well just try sending a kitten via Anset Air Express. I believe they put the ktiten on Air NZ. $678. from Canberra to Aukland. Now, think about what they canrge for a suitcase....Hmmm. The ACCC will be hearing from us shortly. AND to add insult to injury they added GST to the bill. You do not add GST to things that are being exported.
They are a law to themselves, but it is extortion to charge these fees.

I've just recently travelled using a number of Star Alliance airlines and I'd have to say that Air New Zealand was one of the best – except that they were so concerned at weighing carry on luggage that many people had to check theirs in as extra luggage. In my case this was absurd as the heaviest item in my carry on luggage was my laptop (which I was allowed to carry on anyway) but when it was in my bag the total went over the magic 7 kilos.
Other than that their movie selection, leg room and food is now as good as Singapore.

Although I don't agree with Air New Zealand's new baggage policy, I strongly disagree with roego's comment about Ansett. Ansett were playing dirty in an attempt to force Virgin out of business, and it came back to bite them - they got what they deserved, and shouldn't have received ANY sympaty from the public. Even worse, flyers then got slugged with an extra tax to cover the shortcomings of Ansett's unscrupulousness!

Do not bet on it being rescinded. Air New Zealand has never been in the business of being honest and fair. look what they did to Ansett. People should have gone to gaol.
The answer DO NOT FLY WITH THEM.
And the luggage handlers would rather carry 2x11kg than 1x23. eusa_hand.gif

Thanks for the warning "NGE" - You can bet so many people will remember this little travesty on fair play well after the silly policy is rescinded- and the responsible peanut is re-assigned!
Problem is idiots like the inventor of such a rip-off do seem to reach management and spawn other such peanuts in their wake !

Air New Zealand is now punishing travelers for not having big luggage bags.
If you check one bag at 23kg all is fine, however check 2 bags at combined 23kgs and they slug you $40 for the privilege.
I cannot see how it cost 40 dollars to move one extra bag from the terminal to the plane and vice versa. This is just a rip off, and they need to fire the moron responsible for this policy.
Do they have stock in luggage manufacturing???
I now need to go buy a bigger bag, or else just fly with the competition.
Unbelievable the way these airlines come up with new schemes to rip their customers off.
