Depends on where the air vents are. Most air vents are around the sides of the laptop, with ones on the bottom only on some models. The ones on the side are usually directly connected to the heat sink on the processor (and the video cards in some places). Any air vents on the bottom are purely secondary and usually don't get too hot to touch. The bottom of the laptop will always have a bit of heat in it due to how all the components must be jammed in. For that reason, the manufacturer recommends that the laptop not be placed on... well, your lap.

In the interest of helping the laptop keep itself cool, it might be wise to invest in a laptop cooler for when you have the laptop docked on the desk. These usually have 2-3 fans, some have extra ports, and are some are designed to change the angle at which the laptop sits - much like the legs on a keyboard do to help you ergonomically.

A lot of laptops get quite hot - but not so hot that they actually burn things...

I'd be getting in touch with HP and asking them what they think, and where they recommend you take it to be checked out...

...literally. Bought my daughter the HP Pavillion TX1000 tablet a few weeeks ago and it gets too hot to touch. The battery is cool but the vents for the fan seem far too hot to be normal.

Is this normal?
