Wait until a Yahoo account is created (by someone other than yourself) using ALL your correct details in the profile including DOB, photo and spelling of your name (mine's unique)!

In the profile, ficticious details of supposed bizarre sexual preferences and other 'behaviours' were broadcast for all to see.

Like Redsmarti, I have found Yahoo's complaints mechanism driven by 'auto response' emails which are totally useless.

Due to the explicit and slanderous nature of the profile, I reported it to police and that went nowhere. A month later, I recieved a call from DOCS (NSW) with regard to so called allegations of criminal activity in conjunction with minors which
was 'loosely' connected with the Yahoo profile.

Due to my work with children and adolescents, I was manditorily reported to my employer who in turn put me through hours of interviews and interrogation. All four allegations were unfounded due to insufficient evidence (of course as there was NO evidence) but my career was almost up in smoke due to some spiteful lowlife entertaining themselves at my expense.

Just be warned about any internet based service such as Yahoo, Facebook, MySpace ... you may end up far worse than me.

If you want to be insulting why bother replying? And you might at least make your insult relevant. Since I am not only using yahoo but this site as well how could I possibly be a person who fears or despises new technology?

As to what a yahoo account is it is an email account with yahoo. And as to what is so precious about it I used that email account for communicating with different people and organisations. There is also the concern that the hacker could misuse the account say be sending scam or spam emails to others.

Yahoo is a free email service that many people (including myself) use so that they are not tied to their ISP.

A lot of the hijacking of accounts is to try and force you to pay a ransom.

It is a big deal, especially for the people adversely affected.

Thank you for the response. Although it doesn't help that is exactly the point I have been trying to get across to them for days. I have even provided the name and phone number of my employer, said verify that using white pages and then call and ask for me. If that doesn't prove who I am what does?

But no matter what I say I get that smugly condescending reply saying I need to match the details and they won't shift themselves to do anything until I do.

"The Question and Answer is an important security tool for Yahoo! accounts. One of the ways we protect accounts from unauthorized account access is by denying account assistance who contact us and are unable to verify to account information that was provided during registration or when the account was last updated."

Ain't that a nice CYA statement... ?

Obviously somebody has recently updated the info if they stole the account...

Post subject: Yahoo account has been stolen
Organisation name: Yahoo
Issue type: Complaint

Last week somehow my yahoo account was taken over (and yes I have software that should have prevented this).

I tried to access my details via the secret question but the answer I remember shows as being incorrect. I have also tried every possible answer that I can and they also come up as incorrect.

I have communicated this information several times to yahoo and keep getting the same answer.

"The Question and Answer is an important security tool for Yahoo! accounts. One of the ways we protect accounts from unauthorized account access is by denying account assistance who contact us and are unable to verify to account information that was provided during registration or when the account was last updated."

I have been asking for help with increasing amounts of desperation and this is what I keep getting back. In the meantime the lowlife individual who has done this has unobstructed access to my account and information therein.

I have offered to identify the personalised folders in the account, my DOB, my address and even sending them a copy of my drivers licence and none of this apparently helps. I looked up a phone number and they do have a customer care number so I rang that and all it gives is a recorded message saying they don't offer customer care via the phone.

I am completely frustrated and in total desperation. I don't know what I can do to regain access to my account and the people at yahoo are not doing anything to help me except reiterating the information above.
