Sounds strange to me, I don't understand why he would do that for no reason, even if he had a "reason" you would think that he would want to keep the job, unless you gave him such a hard time and he had enough. something is not quite right here.

James homes services mow my lawn ,and I also asked the franchise to cut a stump out for me ,he was paid cash in hand, the stump is still the same as it was before I asked him to remove it , and he is $50.00 better off and laughing, he also made a phone call to me alleging he was a police officer ,and told me there was nothing I could do about it
