Changed from GIO to Youi a year ago because GIO increased rate by 20% (have 4 vehicles with Youi, one with GIO still (my work vehicle)), thought it best to give people a few warnings about the experience.
- GIO approves repairs within hours of getting vehicle to repairer. YOUI takes at least a week, even for not at fault with police support, because they are basically seriously under-resourced.
- YOUI investigate every statement you have made to them. If you don't commute to work, but someone uses the car to go to work once, they use the fact that it was used once against you. They don't for instance use the dictionary definition of 'commute' (which includes the concept of a regular journey) and say that even using the vehicle to go to work ONCE is enough to void their insurance because you have "commuted". They seem to make up their own definitions for words, and their documentation is completely missing clear legal definitions for crucial words like the example here "commute". This is one instance where you are likely to get into disputes because of lack of legal wording, rather than too much!!
- Youi count fully recovered not-at fault accidents against you, and if you do not report them they claim they have been misled and you may not be insured.
- Youi count malicious damage (even on vehicles which you are not insuring) against the holder of the insurance, even if they were not involved nor drove the damaged vehicle to the incident, and will reject a claim based on failing to tell them about a vehicle incident or a driver they never asked about and is not covered!!!
- Youi lose documentation you send them, and you need to resend it - just a delaying tactic I think - ALWAYS get reciept confirmation of every thing sent to them.
- Youi rental cars expire after 2 weeks, but it can take them 2 weeks to approve repairs!!! GIO is the reverse - if they take over a week to get the vehicle on the road - even if you don't pay a rental car extra - they give you a rental car free!!
- I am waiting on a Yoiui claim now which is stalled because they lost doco and now have a backlog on their investigators!! (1 week lost) I expect they will reject it because my wife drove it to work when her regular vehicle broke down (which WAS insured with Youi for driving to work!!)
- Oh - BTW - You can be caught by not changeing the fact that you don't commute to work - basically in a multi-vehicle family, you need to plan the next day fully and change the details on the Youi web site each day based on what you think you might do the next day!! If you don't, then you may have misled Youi and you are probably not insured!!
