I too am insured with NRMA. Have never made a claim in my 26 years of driving and my car was damaged at a shopping centre carpark so I was unable to identify the driver. I was not given a choice of repairer - just told where to take my car - and was not happy with the repair job - bad luck said the NRMA. I then looked in to changing insurers but because I've now had a claim "in the past two years" all other companies want to charge me more for the cover. Not a happy customer.

"SOME ADVICE FROM ONE WHO KNOWS :Sounds to me that YOU are insured with NRMA yes! and because your not at fault you dont see why you should CLAIM on your insurance when the other party is also insured with NRMA."
.... and where in the OP does it say the Third Party was also insured with NRMA?
Obviously to work as an NRMA assessor you don't need to be conversed in the finer points of the english language...

SOME ADVICE FROM ONE WHO KNOWS :Sounds to me that YOU are insured with NRMA yes! and because your not at fault you dont see why you should CLAIM on your insurance when the other party is also insured with NRMA.
--------------------------------------------------
Ok if you claim through the other persons insurance you become the o/p (other party) and even though you may hold insurance cover with the NRMA YOU WILL become the o/p and unless you go to an NRMA repairer they will CUT the QUOTE that you have provided and take of anything that cannot be seen along with consumables, materials etc as seen on TODAY TONIGHT STORY.
--------------------------------------------------
BUT if your not at fault and can provide the personel details of the at fault person it wont effect any no claim bonus and you WONT have to pay any excess SO YOU should be claiming on YOUR own insurance if you want to CHOOSE YOUR OWN REPAIRER, Your policy will state that you can choose your own repairer, thats if YOU are claiming on your own policy.
----------------------------------------------------
As for cost of repairers, all repairers are held to book times and all insurers assess a quote, AAMI are pretty close to NRMA with cost of repairs. When you get your car back it will be repaired industry standards. The book times are the price difference, the insurer basicaly FIXES the HOURS and the RATE'S to there own times and rates AND IF THE REPAIRER WANTS WORK well hes going to conform.
----------------------------------------------------
NOW having been an auto spraypainter for 19 years and haveing a cert IV in motor vehicle assessing, and have just finished mploymnt with NRMA i can tell you that to be an NRMA repairer you need to be a sausage factory and cut a heap of corners to survive and the end loser is YOU the consumer.
-----------------------------------------------------
an example of this would be : the assessor cuts the quote but ok's the 2 x doorglass, windscreen, rear screen to be removed. The repairer then masks or ropes the glass but still charges for the removal ah! the guy just made some cash back at the consumers expence and this is one of their RECOMMENDED QUALITY REPAIRERS.So if they do this to there own insured who makes a claim then expect far worse if your the other party and that is what YOU are trying to be THE OTHER PARTY.
-----------------------------------------------------
In 19 years i have worked for quite a few of their repairers and the quality is just not their because of the volume your trying to do. Any NON NRMA repairer is happy with say 7-8 good jobs a week per tradie an NRMA shop 10-15 not so great jobs and your car is one of them. IF YOUR IN BRISBANE INSURE WITH SUNCORP.

I am comprehensively insured with NRMA insurance. I was recently involved in a not-at-fault collision. My policy states that I am entitled to chose my own repairer, however if the difference is greater than NRMA’s best price they will cash settle at the lower price.
The issue here is that I received two quotes from my choice of repairers at roughly $2,200 and $2,500. NRMA’s best price was $1,200. On closer inspection of their quote, I noticed that a number of items appeared without a cost and labour was significantly different in price. Some items didn’t even appear with cost of labour, and they refused to rectify this quote to be comparable with mine.
NRMA refuses to move from their position and my “choice of repairer” is really their choice of repairer. I really doubt if the work can be done for the price they outline, so it is a well construed fabrication by NRMA to ensure you always chose their repairer, or face losing money. I have contacted the Financial Serviced Ombudsman also with regards to this.
