Platycat, I think you will find mental health establishments are not medical units that deliver medical treatment and therefore do not have to have the same floor coverings as medical wards.
Cowdy ward for example has carpet on the floors.

Mental health is usually on the bottom of health care priorities as far as funding is concerned. What you have observed at John Hunter Hospital isn't all that unusual. I have observed first hand the poor state of hospitals and know plenty of people who can tell a tale of the incredible.

I am not sure if this has been seen to now--but I went to visit a friend there a couple of years ago and they had CARPET on the floors--YES carpet in a hospital--and this was filthy and also had huge holes in it--surely carpet in a hospital is NOT easy to keep clean!?

"I think the ciggies would be more detrimental to your health than some maggots. If you stayed inside and didn't smoke, you could easily avoid the maggots".

What a stupid comment, you're so sensitive.

Hygiene refers to the set of practices associated with the preservation of health and healthy living.

Wikipedia definition

I have just had the privelidge of being sectioned to a mental health facility recently and was horrified by the filth of the building.
I am in my early fifties and a trained nurse from the old guard.
Two weeks ago as an inpatient of Top End Mental Health Darwin NT i was subjected to maggots yes maggots in the outdoor rotundra where we were aloud to smoke.
The Cowdy ward has a team building BBQ every Wednesday which is kind of nice, my horror was that by Saturday the bin liner was not changed and meat scraps were festering in the humid atmosphere.

Other patients had noticed the maggots crawling about the concrete on friday and were told "put up with it" by nursing staff. The grubs did not come to my notice until Saturday.
When I complained to the newly registered young professional nurse she in formed me I will have to wait until the contractor cleaner arrived. Her comment was that she wasn't responsible for cleaning.
Da!
By this time the maggots were swarmimg about us. As an old nurse I was horrified and aked if I could empty the bin. No No No I had to behave myself or find myself spending extra time in the unit.
Well the poor cleaner eventually arrived to a bunch of angry "mental patients" he emptied the bin and told us to step on the crawling maggots.

eusa_wall.gif After kicking up a stink 'someone" (probably an old style nurse with some emotional inteligence)got the cleaner to come back and hose off the concrete.

It's no wonder we have Super bugs in our hospitals what is happening to our HEALTH SYSTEM..... too many stuck up professional uni trained snots who have come into the 'profession' with the promise of work and travel and no concept of where the bucket room is and posters telling them how to wash their bloody hands.
